Shameless Plugs: BBB10 and Occult Space Ravens

For the first time in five years, I've produced one of my tiny Black Box Books supplements for Swords and Wizardry WhiteBox. It's called Black Box Books Tome Ten: Jungles and Jaguars.

For 98 cents, you get new tables, new monsters (yes, including jaguar stats), a new Fighter subclass / variant, and a new race (a take on jaguarfolk, naturally). As usual, there's a full size version and a tiny, foldable pocketmod included, not to mention a plain text version for your cut and pasting delight.

Oh, and this is my first time using the Mythmere Games AELF license, a replacement for the OGL, for those who care about such things. 😉

d10 Surreal Encounters in Faerie

As I've mentioned a few times by now, there is a great channel on the OSR Discord server called #dice-democracy where you can crowdsource random tables. I'm presenting tables that I started, now that they're finished.

Therefore, this isn't 100% my work; the people on the server are very creative when it comes to stuff like this. I remain very grateful for them putting up with my ideas for tables.

This should be the last one for a while; I've caught up with all the tables on the server that I've started.

d20 Disturbing Sounds

Disturbing sounds that one does not want to hear alone in the dark in an English-speaking country in the 19th century, or a setting like that.

Setting Via Equipment Lists (Santicorn 2023)

It's time for Secret Santicorn!

I got this prompt: "Characterize a number of different settings - as far apart as you'd like - via equipment tables only. Bonus points the more specific the tables."

I was pleased to get this one, because trying to imply setting with equipment tables is something I want to be able to do, and have experimented with a little already.

So, here I've got two links to two different versions of the same thing. A Google Doc, and a PDF, in case the fonts in the Google Doc don't work for y'all.

Settlement Names for FORGE

I wrote this for FORGE, but it works for any OSR game, really. And a few other games besides.

Serpico in Space! Or Something.

 Secret Santicore 2017!

Prompt: An encounter table for 1970s New York City, except the genre is space opera and people are just getting used to visiting aliens and future tech.

I have this as a DOCX, but it's prolly easier to just cut and paste it here. Also, in this version I've corrected a couple of errors and tried to make it a little clearer.

Serpico in Space! Or Something.

Soluble Sahuagin

12 OSR monsters. 200 words, not counting the title. Written in 2016, IIRC.

I later used some of these for my "Strange but Useful Critters" entry for Secret Jackalope 2022.

Untamed Sovereigns

This blast from the past is from Secret Jackalope 2020...

Prompt: "A monster or dungeon based on themes of life, light, birth and growth. Preferably outwardly wholesome yet somehow dangerous to a party, rather than body horror grossness! To please the jackalope, the man chose B/X Moldvay statistics, backwards AC, and you'll have to make up the treasure yourself, hahahahaha..."

I actually made three monsters, representing different parts of the lifecycle of the Untamed Sovereign.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qG-M4eeAiNxnZjICeLmytzLMiB8UCkz4WTBk5cgIEuI/edit?usp=sharing

Sages, scholars, adventurers, and tellers of tall tales all debate the origins of Untamed Sovereigns. Some say they are the deliberate creation of druids to strike back at urban blight, while others claim that they are just the balance of nature swinging the pendulum at last. Some few speak of an Elemental Plane of Vegetation, but that is usually considered but a fancy as apocryphal as the Demiplane of Paper.

Even the number of cities that have been consumed by the Untamed Sovereigns is in dispute. After all, not every moss-covered ruin is the result of their action. But when news and trade from a once-bustling metropolis dries up, the whispers start up among the peasants...

Jackalope Menus

 More Jackalope 2022 content!

This is a set of random tables for generating menus for inns, taverns, and whatnot.

Jackalope Holocrons

So, okay. I wrote a lot of things for Jackalope 2022 because a lot of people didn't do their prompts. I was having a seriously good time.

Star Wars is always fun, and I got to slip at least one "Grey Sith" concept in there.

Strange But Useful Critters

"Nonstandard creatures with useful bits and how to harvest them"

This is a prompt I picked up for the 2022 Secret Jackalope. Secret Jackalope is based on Secret Santicore, but happens at another time of the year. In practice, once a year when the stars align, people on the OSR Discord Server create prompts, and each person is given a different person's prompt to write.

So, this is ten very short descriptions of strange creatures, each followed by a section on harvesting bits from them.

Again, this was a blast to write. I love coming up with lore for extremely weird things.

Odd Electric Stars, Unnumbered

"Give me a starter package table for Into the Odd that could be used for the default settings of Stars Without Number or Traveller. For a bonus give me a list of failed careers in the style of Electric Bastionland that would also fit those two settings."

This is the prompt I got for the 2022 Secret Jackalope. Secret Jackalope is based on Secret Santicore, but happens at another time of the year. In practice, once a year when the stars align, people on the OSR Discord Server create prompts, and each person is given a different person's prompt to write.

I had a lot of fun with this one. It includes a science fiction astrology system!
