How Did That Ancient Civilization Die? (d30)

As some of you likely already know by now, there is a great channel on the OSR Discord server called #dice-democracy where you can crowdsource random tables. I'm presenting tables that I started, now that they're finished.

Therefore, this isn't 100% my work; the people on the server are very creative when it comes to stuff like this. I remain very grateful for them putting up with my ideas for tables.

How Did That Ancient Civilization Die? (d30)

1. Decadence in ruling caste of sorcerers after discovery of cross-planar drug trade

2. Dug too deep, released imprisoned Dark Lord

3. Built too high, resulting in overzealous smiting by a young demigod

4. Radiation from poorly-shielded nuclear power plants

5. Big meteor flattened capital city

6. Plague of walking dead, host species extinct

7. Invasion of unprecedented size

8. Mutual agreement to disband

9. The biggest, baddest (& deadliest) musical ritual you've ever seen

10. Barbarian horde backed by.... (d6)

1-3: God of Slaughter

4-5: God of Justice

  6: Angry creditors

11. Supernatural Tsunami that only flooded buildings leaving streets and open areas unscathed.

12. Angered the fae, entire civilization put to sleep magically

13. Found a powerful and even more ancient relic, teleported entire civilization 50' underneath the ground.

14. Virus that caused a deadly allergy to grain killed many; everything else collapsed

15. A God of dreams or stories became obsessed with them and the civilization was whisked away to their realm, accessible only through the astral plane

16. Much of their daily needs and industry were powered by bound elementals, they became unbound and vengeful

17. Society became dependent on automation and the knowledge to repair/renew it was lost

18. Spirits of displeased ancestors came back en masse, haunted everyone incessantly.

19. Invented a superweapon and neighbors banded together to destroy them.

20. Mass Hysteria or a mad god caused everyone to pray nonstop until they died of exhaustion or neglect of basic needs

21. A period of inclement weather, crop failure, economic hardship, extreme intergroup violence, and high mortality because of an ice age

22. Civil War. Society split in two, re-roll on this table twice to find out what happened to the two spin-off civilizations.

23. Developed powerful but flawed enchantments that unfortunately produced radiation as a side effect. The enchantments were used everywhere to improve quality of life, and sickness and sterility followed.

24. Ecological collapse of now-extinct staple crop

25. Whole populace taken to a paradise planet

26. Lightning strike of extreme intensity

27. Sapient parasites died, host species nonsapient

28. The Sea People. It's always the Sea People....

29. Overpopulation / population overshoot caused by widespread use of fertility drugs or rituals due to high prestige associated with families with large numbers of children

30. Lost a war —> needed to pay reparations / tribute —> hyperinflation —> economic collapse —> mass migration to nearby rival civilizations
